It enjoys some obscure fame as the 1584 birthplace of Rev. John Lathrop, founder of Barnstable, Massachusetts and ancestor of a number of famous Americans including Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Several Lothropp family members have death or burial dates recorded as January 6, 1588, but as there is no record of a catastrophic event on that date, it is believed to be merely a recording date to catch up on vital statistics which had gone unreported for some length of time.

Etton has been known to suffer quite badly during floods, due to its position in a small valley. The most recent flood in the village, 25 June 2007, has been said to be the worst seen in 50 years.
