gastropod mollusc of the familyBuccinidae , endemic toNew Zealand . It is found under stones on the lower shore, around the northern half of theNorth Island .The shell is small to medium sized, fusiform, and very variable in both sculpture and coloration. The typical form is whitish with two broad purplish-brown spiral bands on the
body whorl . Other variants are plain bluish-white; plain whitish; greyish, with numerous brown spiral lines; and brown lines, often broken into a series of dots and irregularly blotched in brown.Maximum height is 26 mm, and width 12 mm.
