chapel , built bySt. Cauragh , and dedicated toSt. Eyon .The chapel was cut out of the natural rock, and is believed to have never possessed a
roo f. Adjacent to this chapel are the ruins of St Cauragh'sWell , itswater s were believed to have miraculous properties.Habitat
Knockeyon and other surrounding hills around the southeastern shore of the lake support
deciduous woodland which is comprised mostly of native species.Hazel ,rowan , ash andoak are abundant. Exotic species occur occasionally, includingbeech .The neighbouring
Knockbody wood is inhabited by wildpheasant and is a popular attraction for local pheasanthunter s.
On occasions the pochard population, which is one of the largest inIreland , has exceeded the threshold for international importance. (i.e. 3500 individual fowl)
