"Kamome" meansseagull in Japanese.The service in its current form commenced in 1976, but the name Nihongo|"Kamome"|鴎 was first used in 1937 on limited-express trains operating between Tokyo and
Kobe . This service continued until 1943.The name Nihongo|"Kamome"|かもめ was subsequently revived from 1953 for use on limited-express services operating between
Kyoto andHakata (and later to Nagasaki). This service was discontinued in 1975 with the completion of theSanyō Shinkansen to Hakata.Rolling stock
