Beowulf (Blart)

Sir Beowulf, or Beo for short, is a character from Dominic Barker's fantasy novel ' and its sequel '. He is a burly warrior who joins Blart and Capablanca on their quest.

Description

Beowulf is very large and burly (He is described as the biggest person Blart had ever seen). His muscles are easily visible, and he wields a large broad sword. He has black hair that trails to his shoulders and a thin beard. His attire (As seen on the book's cover) appears somewhat barbaric. He also wears wrist gauntlets.

Personality

Beowulf is stern and has a quick temper. For example, when he first meets Blart he tries to kill him because Blart laughs at him when he falls over. He is somewhat clumsy, this probably because of his size. He can be ignorant and doesn't think before he acts. He likes to torture his enemies and finds violence to be the answer to most problems. He has a hunger that could match Blart's and complains when he hasn't had any food. He is very proud and moans when his shiny armor rusts from a previous underwater encounter with sharks.

Beo enjoys singing great bards, but, unfortunately for his companions, he is tone-deaf and his singing is more like wailing.

Beowulf is a warrior, and his one true goal in life is to become a knight. To become a knight, he must kill a dragon and present its severed tail to someone of royal stature. He eventually succeeds in severing a dragon of Illyria's tail, angering fellow companion Princess Lois.

Role in "Blart"

Beowulf joins Blart and Capablanca on their quest in the Jolly Murderers Inn. He is the third member of the party. He seems to have a history with Capablanca and apparently fough by his side at a battle called the Battle of Longbarrow Hill. He joins them on their quest after a quick conversation.

Beowulf is one of the main reason that Zoltab's minions and ministers learn of their quest. He drunkingly tells two undercover minions, , about their quest and the identities of the company.

While in Illyria, Beowulf sees an entire field of dragons. He kills one and severs its tail to present to the king of Illyria. A furious Princess Lois chases after him in fury but he takes no notice of her. When at the palace, Beowulf is declined a knighting by the overly-peaceful king and queen.

When they arrive one night at a desert, Beowulf (Along with Princess Lois and Pig the Horse) are kidnapped by Zoltab's minions. Beowulf is imprisoned in the tower.

When Capablanca and Blart arrive and the entire company is taken to Zoltab, Beowulf and the others must fight Zoltab's greatest servants: Famine, Disease, Pestilence and Death. Once defeated, before they are all to be immediately executed, Beowulf asks Zoltab to knight him. Zoltab does so, but is defeated before he may kill Beowulf. At the novel's ending, Beowulf is still with the company and full-fledged knight.

Role in "Blart II"

Beowulf is first seen threatening Uther the Merchant in Murkstan, as Uther had pretended to sell "Blartarina the Shy" (Blart in a red dress) to a young man. He is still on a quest to become a knight, as his knighthood was revoked because of Zoltab's evilness and therefore he could not appoint a good knight. He threatens to cleave Uther in two to save a damsel in distress. He then helps the company to search for Princess Lois and Pig the Horse. Along the course of this he murders two border guards which causes the party to become well known as murderers as well as enemies of the state. He later aids the party when they are trapped by Baron Kilbride, killing many enemy troops. Later he falls into a glacier on Mount Xag and has to have his feet massaged back to life by Blart. He ends up getting the knighthood he deserves.
