- Allan Boardman
Professor Allan Boardman is well-known both in the UK and globally for his work on surface plasmons and
guided wave optics , especiallynonlinear waves ,solitons , magneto-optics and negative refractingmetamaterials . He is a leading theorist and numerical analyst in these areas, especially magneto-optics and metamaterials, and was recently cited by theOptical Society of America for his seminal contributions and exemplary leadership and service to the optics community. Because of this he has been unanimously approved byOSA Board of Editors to serve as a Topical Editor forJOSA B .Allan Boardman is Professor of Applied Physics at the
University of Salford and holds a Doctor of Science degree from theUniversity of Durham UK, founded by Oliver Cromwell. He is a Fellow of the UKInstitute of Physics and a Fellow of the UKInstitute of Mathematics and its Applications . He recently co-Chaired the major UK photonics meeting called Photon06. He is co-chair of theSPIE Photonic Metamaterials conference series to be held in San Diego and has organized other conferences, including being a Director of a number of pivotal NATO Advanced Study Institutes. He is the newly elected chair of the Optics and Photonics Division of the UK
Institute of Physics and is Vice-President of the United Kingdom Consortium for Optics and Photonics (UKCPO). He is also a Board member of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division of theEuropean Physical Society . He is the UK voice on the new European strategy program called OPERA [Optics and Photonics in the European Research Area] 2015.He receives many invitations to speak internationally: for example, a plenary invitation in August 2005 to talk about “Left-handed Materials in a Complex World” at the SPIE Warsaw meeting. His recent research activities focus upon nonlinear and/or gyrotropic surface polaritons on negatively refracting media, optical vortices, solitons in nonlinear magneto-optics, nonlinear electromagnetic modeling, nonlinear microwave magnetics, complex microwave materials, magneto-photonic band gap phenomena, dissipative solitons and electromagnetic modeling for mm-wave devices, magneto-optic devices and EMC problems.
