Tuatha Dé Danann (Atlantean)

Tuatha Dé Danann (Atlantean)

The Tuatha Dé Danann are a human offshoot that appear in DC Comics and live in the legendary city of Thierna Na Oge.

Background

The Tuatha Dé Danann are human in appearance with usually green hair and an orange skin. Their evolution at the deepest depths of the ocean resulted in numerous adaptations to this new environment. Their skin is able to survive the intense pressure of the depths of the ocean which has had the added effect of increasing both their strength and vitality to levels far exceeding those of humans.

Interestingly, the race acquired an affinity with magic and, though not born mages, they are capable of using it. And, though an advanced and civilized people, they reject the use of science in favour of magic. Furthermore, the race also developed fell martial skills in combat. They are also a religious people, having their own pantheon, including the mother goddess Dana. Religious artifacts are also known, such as the Lia Fail.

In terms of government, they live under a monarchy, with a ruling council known as the Conclave of the Twelve that guides their civilization. Their leaders have the style of King.

Finally, their people are divided into clans, not unlike the pagan tribes of mediaeval Europe.

History

The Tuatha Dé Danann civilization begins within one of the city states of the mighty Atlantean Empire before the cataclysm which destroyed that civilization. Despite the geological instability, many of the Atlanteans survived and estalished other cities such as Poseidonis and Tritonis.

One such group, however, established Thierna Na Oge which became one of the fabled Lost Cities of Atlantis. Their time underwater and the isolation its citizens achieved would forever alter the species compared to the base human species. They remained fiercely isolationist and their skin began to change.

They would further differ from their Atlantean cousins by rejecting science in favour of magic which their ancestors had long ago mastered. Thus, the current Tuatha Dé Danann would be born. They would regain contact with their Atlantean cousins through Aquaman who became embroiled in a civil war. After that period of upheaval was over, attempts are being made to reunite this cousin species with the rest of their kind.
