Piotr Gajewski, a native of
Poland , is the founder, artistic director and conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra ofWashington, D.C. , currently in residence at theMusic Center at Strathmore inRockville, Maryland . It was formerly known as theNational Chamber Orchestra .In addition to his appearances with the
National Philharmonic , Maestro Gajewski is in much demand as a guest conductor. In recent years, he has appeared with most of the major orchestras in his nativePoland , as well as theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic inEngland , theKarlovy Vary Symphony in theCzech Republic , theOkanagan Symphony inCanada and numerous orchestras in theUnited States . Gajewski made his opera debut in 1994 with Washington'sSummer Opera Theatre .Born in Poland, Piotr Gajewski began studying piano at age four. After emigrating to the United States in 1969, he continued his studies at the
New England Conservatory Preparatory Division,Carleton College and theUniversity of Cincinnati ,College-Conservatory of Music , where he earnedB.M. and M.M. degrees inOrchestral Conducting .Upon completing his formal education, Gajewski continued refining his conducting skills at the 1983
Tanglewood Music Festival inMassachusetts , where he was awarded aLeonard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship and where his teachers includedLeonard Bernstein ,Seiji Ozawa ,Andre Previn ,Gunther Schuller ,Gustav Meier andMaurice Abravanel .Maestro Gajewski has conducted many important world premieres, including works bySteven Gerber ,Joel Hoffman ,Andreas Makris ,Gerhard Samuel ,Burnett Thompson , andPeter Ware . In 2000, his recording with the National Philharmonic (then the National Chamber Orchestra) ofSteven Gerber ’sViolin Concerto ,Cello Concerto , andSerenade for String Orchestra on theKoch International label was released to enthusiastic reviews. Gajewski is also a winner of many prizes and awards, among them a prize atNew York 's prestigiousLeopold Stokowski Conducting Competition. He serves on the music faculty at theGeorge Washington University , and, in addition to his music career, Gajewski, who also holds a law degree from theColumbus School of Law , makes time for a limited number of legal consulting projects. He recently won election to Rockville City Council, capturing 14% of ballots cast, the highest amount of the 4 Council seat winners.
