The Jennifers began building a reputation in the Oxford indie music scene, influenced by
Buzzcocks ,the Jam ,The Kinks ,the Who , and including traits of thepop-punk era, characterized by fast, three-chord, guitar-based, catchy tunes. Live performances included theJericho Tavern where they sold a demo tape recorded and produced by Nick Langston at Stargoat Studios nearBanbury . The demo featured three songs - "I want to fly" which featured a 20 second countdown at the beginning, the recording of a rocket launch and then a fast guitar-based song which appeared influenced byThe Stone Roses , the second song, "Tell me" was similar in style but changed to a slower, almost funk jam at the end, the third song "She is my World" was a guitar-based ballad. The band enjoyed enough success to release one single in 1992, "Just Got Back Today ", onNude Records , which is now a highly sought after rarity. Nic Goffey left to be replaced by Tara Milton.Strong, Martin C.:"The Great Alternative & Indie Discography", 1999, Canongate, ISBN 0-86241-913-1] Milton left, and Davies went off to university, with Gaz and Danny carrying on their songwriting partnership, and withMick Quinn , would soon form successfulBritpop bandSupergrass . Nic formed a directing partnership with friend Dom, and together they now direct music videos (including many videos for Supergrass themselves).An un-related American band called "The Jennifers" was formed in Baltimore, Maryland around the same time in 1992, and are still playing today.
