Beatrice Faust was born Beatrice Fennessey in Glenhuntly, a suburb of Melbourne. Her mother died at birth and she was brought up by her father and three aunts. She attended
Melbourne University , where she became friends withGermaine Greer . Her first marriage was to Clive Faust during her time at University.She has one son, Stephen (b.1965) from a relationship with a Finnish academic Adam Murtonen.
She was one of the first women to argue for abortion law reform, sex education and civil liberties. [Adelaide (1988) p. 63] . She also contributed to the Australian edition of
