Snatch and the Poontangs

Snatch and the Poontangs

"Snatch and the Poontangs" is an album of sexually oriented blues songs released in 1969. The album features bandleader Johnny Otis on piano and drums, his son guitar player Shuggie Otis and vocalist Delmar "Mighty Mouth" Evans as "The Hawk", "Prince Wunnerful", and "The Mouth", respectively.

More than half the songs on the album are based on well-known African-American folklore.

* "Signifyin' Monkey" is a two-part rendition of the Bre'r-Rabbit-like antics of the "Signifyin' Monkey" who defeats all the other jungle beasts through his cleverness.
* "That's Life" is a series of rude limericks set to a blues riff.
* "The Great Stack-a-lee" retells the tale of "Stagger Lee" and his barroom fight, with more prostitutes than better-known versions.
* "The Pissed-off Cowboy" is a rap-style folk tale of a cowboy offended by a restaurant's snobbish attitude, which he answers with an astonishing stream of rhyming vulgar notions.
* "Hey Shine" tells the tale of the "Titanic", focusing on the legend that black boxing champion Jack Johnson (boxer) rescued all the black passengers.
* "Two-time Slim" and "Big John Jeeter" are "dirty dozens" exercises.
* "Two girls in love (with each other)" consists of wordless moaning in the style of "Je t'aime... moi non plus" by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.

The album, which has achieved cult status, was re-released on CD in 2002 in combination with the more mainstream Johnny Otis album "Cold Shot" which also originated in 1969.

"Snatch" is a slang term for "female genitalia" and "poontang" is slang for "women viewed exclusively in their sexual aspect".
