Vadner

Vadner

Vadner is a town of about 30,000 people in Nasik district. It is situated in Maharashtra state of Indian Republic. Vadner is famous for its grapes.

The town is predominantly an agrarian one - with ~80% of its population engaged in agriculture and related activities. The remaining 20% are in supporting activities like services, transport, retail and so on. Vadner is a fairly rich town. Much of these riches are attributable to the grape farming. This has led to a general flourishing of other related trades as well notably transport.

Culturally Vadner is a typical western Maharashtrian village - in terms of accent, social norms, things which are admired and things which are looked down upon. The predominant religion is Hindu (though a good number of Muslim families are also there) and predominant caste amongst Hindus is Maratha. Most major farmer families are Maratha while some from other castes have also done fairly well. The caste divide is not very strong in day to day activities. However in terms of marriages and political lobbying, caste divides are well entrenched.

Every year in the month of April, big festival takes place on the eve of marriage of god Bhairvnath. Many citizens who are staying away from vadner due to job or education ,came to vadner with their families to attend this festival.

Vadner is a busy place on most days of the week. People can be seen loitering around in the town on their bikes. Most of them do work in their own farms through the morning and afternoon and come down to chill in the evening with friends. Some have houses in both the farms as well as the town while others prefer only one of the two. General atmosphere in the town revolves around crop cycles, elections (local, state level and national) and major functions in the village.

Technologically Vadner still has some way to go. Internet has still not quite entrenched it yet. Banking is driven by local cooperatives. Markets for nonessential items are underdeveloped and people rely on nearby large towns for the same. There is no major hospital. However, people are hoping someone will build one soon.

All in all, Vadner can be best described as a prosperous town with singleminded focus on higher yield from its farming - with little attention to improving the quality of life significantly.
