Esther Rose

Esther Rose (1901-1990), an American painter, worked in oils, collage, silkscreen and watercolors.

Biography

Esther Holbeck, who was of Swedish-Norwegian descent, was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and at 20 married Frank Rose, an amateur photographer and a sports writer at the Two Harbors, Minnesota, newspaper. Shortly after marrying, they settled in San Diego, California, where they established the city's first Karmel Korn Shop in downtown San Diego, at 7th and B Streets where the San Diego Symphony is housed today in the renovated building.

Each year Mrs. Rose entered her paintings in the San Diego County Fair, held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where she was awarded first-, second- and third-place ribbons. After the Roses retired, they moved to Carmel, California, where Rose continued studying art and received awards in the Monterey and Carmel Valley county fairs. Rose, who began painting at age 45 after studying under water color instructor J. Milford Ellison, is known for her impressionist renditions of California coastal images.

Esther and Frank had three children, including the late Russian Orthodox Hieromonk Seraphim Rose and author and antiques expert, the late Eileen Rose Busby. Grandchildren include scientist J. Michael Scott and true crime author Cathy Scott.
