Wisse Alfred Pierre Smit

Wisse Alfred Pierre Smit (6 December 1903, Heumen – 20 June 1986) was a poet and an influential Dutch literary historian. He was a specialist in Dutch literature of the Golden Age (17th century).

W.A.P. Smit worked as a teacher for 17 years, before he accepted a professorship in Dutch literature at the University of Utrecht in 1945. He published various works of poetry [Smit, W.A.P. 1927. Feesten van het jaar] [Smit, W.A.P. 1944. "Stedetroost"] [Smit, W.A.P. 1944. "Dagboek onder het kruis."] and editions of a number of largely forgotten Dutch poets ["Jacobus Revius, Over-Ysselsche Sangen en Dichten. Uitgegeven, met ongedrukte gedichten vermeerderd en van verklarende aanteekeningen voorzien door W.A.P. Smit." (2 volumes, 1930 and 1935; introduction and notes by W.A.P. Smit)] ["Jan van der Noot, Het Bosken en Het Theatre." (With an introduction and notes of W.A.P. Smit and W. Vermeer. 1953.)] . He gained academic renown with a number of studies on various aspects of 17th century Dutch literature. [Smit, W.A.P. 1964. "Het Nederlandse renaissance-toneel als probleem en taak voor de literatuur-historie." (transl.: "Dutch Renaissance Drama as a problem and duty for Literary History.")] [Smit, W.A.P. "Kalliope in de Nederlanden. Het Renaissancistisch-klassicistische epos van 1550 tot 1850." (transl.: "Kalliope in the Netherlands. The Classical Renaissance Epic from 1550 till 1850.") Volume 1 published in 1975, volume 2 in 1983, anticipated third volume has never been completed.] Through his publications and his guidance to doctoral students, he had a considerable influence on the development of Dutch literary history in the 20th century.
