Northern Premier League . The club is based in Lincoln. 'The Whites', as they are commonly known, play at the Ashby Avenue ground, which backs on to the picturesque Hartsholme Park.Lincoln United Football Club began life as Lincoln Amateurs in
1938 , just one year before the outbreak ofWorld War II , and were admitted to the Lincoln League. In
1951 , they signed a professional player fromNottingham Forest , which meant that they could no longer qualify as amateurs. After a brainstorming session between the players following an away match at Sleaford, they came up with the name Lincoln United.Following an extremely disappointing season that saw the premature departure of former boss
John Ramshaw and the failed appointment of Mark Shaw, the Whites were relegated to the UniBond First Division South. Former keeper and erstwhile reserve team boss, Seamus Lawless, was subsequently handed the task of restoring credibility and will lead his new charges into the 2008/09 season with the expectation of promotion weighing heavily on his shoulders from United's faithful support. Lawless has stated he wishes to rely on locally-based players to represent the Whites and, while he is an untried an untested first team manager, hopes are high among United's support base that Lawless can lead United to glory in season 2008/09. Fact|date=July 2008They have reached the first round proper of the
FA Cup in seasons 1991-92 and 1997-98.Honours
