- Francois Simars de Bellisle
Francois Simars de Bellisle (1695-1763) was a Frenchman who shipwrecked on the
Bolivar Peninsula , near present-dayGalveston, Texas , in1722 . He had been sailing forNew Orleans . He was captured byAkokisa natives, and had to subsist for some time on the land. His documentation of this ordeal is considered the first account of theAkokisa tribe. cite book
