FAA (Forças Armadas Angolanas)
- FAA (Forças Armadas Angolanas)
Angolan Armed Forces that succeeded FAPLA following the abortive Bicesse Accord with UNITA in 1991. As part of the peace agreement, troops from both armies were to be demilitarized and then integrated. Integration was never completed as UNITA went back to war in 1992.
The general population of Luanda and other cities in Angola is highly militarized due to popular identification with the battle for independence by the EPLA (Exercito Popular Pela Liberacão de Angola), national service through 27 years of active warfare and the importance of the FAA as a major employer. The extent of militarization can be evidenced the continued use of 'noms de guerre' as the primary form of social identification by most male members of urban society.
Consequences for UNITA members in Luanda were harsh with FAPLA veterans persecuting their erstwhile opponents in certain areas and reports of vigilantism.
