John Sanford (governor)

John Sanford (ca. 1605-May 1654), born in Alford, Lincolnshire, [ [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbpretz/ps03/ps03_267.html John Sanford ] ] England, was a founder of the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and a governor of the united towns of Portsmouth and Newport.

Sanford migrated to New England in 1631 aboard the "Lyon". He moved to Rhode Island with the party that supported Anne Hutchinson and signed the Portsmouth Compact with other founders of the town.

He was married twice, first to Elizabeth Webb, with whom he had two children, then to Bridget Hutchinson, daughter of William and Anne Hutchinson.
