It is the largest stadium in Syria, and is currently used mostly for football matches. It serves as a home ground of Al-Ittihad. The stadium was opened in 2007 and holds 61,000 spectators. [ [http://www.fussballtempel.net/afc/SYR.html www.fussballtempel.net] ]
Al-Ittihad played a friendly match against Fenerbahçe SK of Turkey on 3 April 2007 for the opening of the stadium which ended in a 2-2 draw.
