The town of Shindand is the center of the Shindand District in the Herat Province, Afghanistan. It is located on coord|33.3036|N|62.14|E| at 1066 m Altitude. Near by the town is Shindand Airbase (a military and civil airport).

This town is the historic Persian city of Sabzevar ("Green fields") . Its Persian name is in recent times changed into "Shindand" (a Pashtun word meaning "Green pond") by the government in line with its Pashtunisation policy.
