The southern edge of the village is bordered by theMetropolitan borough of Barnsley within thecounty ofSouth Yorkshire . Although the village is one of the smallest inKirklees it boasts one pub, a dentist, a church and cricket pitch. Upper Denby also features a first schoolDenby C of E first school which George Elliott attended.In the 2001 census the population was given as 719 and includes the settlement of High Flatts.
