- Edwin Sill Fussell
Edwin Sill Fussell (b. 1922, d.
La Jolla , California27 August 2002 ) was a professor of English literature at theUniversity of California at San Diego . He was the elder brother ofPaul Fussell .Early life
Fussell grew up in southern California. In 1943 he attained a baccalaureate from
Pomona College . Thereafter he joined the Navy, serving aboard a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II. He received a doctorate from Harvard in 1949.Career
Fussell first taught at the
University of California at Berkeley . He refused to sign aloyalty oath , losing his job as a result. Fussell went to Pomona College, his alma mater, where he taught American Literature. After teaching at theClaremont Graduate School , Fussell joined the faculty of UC-San Diego. He retired in 1991.Retirement
After retiring in 1991, Fussell lived in
Paris andRome . He still wrote, especially aboutHenry James ,Chateaubriand , andBalzac .Works
