During the end of
1502 and the early part of1503 the Spanish stood at bay in the entrenched camp atBarletta near theOfanto river on the shores of theAdriatic sea . Once hearing about the retreat and departure ofLouis d'Armagnac, Duke of Nemours , Gonzalo decided to launch an offensive in a Moorishguerrilla style on the town ofRuvo which was defended byJacques de la Palice .
