Abraham Prescott

Abraham Prescott (1789-1858) is a noted luthier, particularly of the double bass, who worked in Deerfield, New Hampshire and Concord, New Hampshire during the 19th century. Prescott also made keyboard instruments such as melodians. He is also known to have sold umbrellas. Prescott basses are prized by professional musicians in orchestras throughout the United States. Most Prescott basses were originally built as three string basses for use in churches, and later converted to four string basses.

One particularly famous Prescott bass was owned by jazz legend Scott LaFaro. The bass was damaged in the auto accident that killed LaFaro in 1961. It was later restored by Barrie Kolstein and is currently owned by Kolstein and Son, New York.
