Humad

Humad

Humad (or Humbad) is the name of an ancient Jain community originally from Rajasthan, India. Their traditional center is Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, Dungarpur and Sagwada region, often called Vagad (or Raidesh), in Rajasthan [Jaina Community: A social survey, Vilas Sangave, Popular Prakashan, 1980] . They mainly follow the Digambar Jain tradition.

They are divided into 18 gotras.

They are mainly found in MP, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

In Maharashtra, they are said to have arrived during establishment of the Maratha rule in Surat [Maharashtra ka Jain Samaj, Mahavir Sanglikar, Pub. Jain Friends, 1998.] . The famous industrial house Walchand Hirachand belongs to this community.

History

The oldest known inscription mentioning the Humad community is an inscription of the famous Shantinath temple at Jhalarapatan which dates to 1109 AD [http://www.jainheritagecentres.com/rajasthan/jhalarpatan.htm JHALARPATAN] .

Legends

According to a legend, the Kshatriays of Lad (Gujarat-Rajasthan border region) were initiated by a Jain monk Hemachndra (not to confused with Hemachandra Suri of Patan) [Hiralal Salagia, Humbad Sabhyata aur Sanskrati ka Itihas, http://www.humadsamaj-ahmedabad.org/StaticWebPages/PublicationOfHumad.aspx] .

Khedbrahma, where an ancient step-well (bawadi) exists, is sometimes regarded to be the original center of the Humbads. According to a legend, each statue in the step-well is associated one Humad clan.
