Verdina Shlonsky (born
January 22 ,1905 ,Kremenchuk ,Ukraine ; diedFebruary 20 ,1990 ,Tel Aviv ) was anIsraeli composer, pianist, and piano teacher, often described as the leading female Israeli composer of her time.Shlonsky studied piano in
Berlin withEgon Petri and Arthur Schnabl, and composition inParis withNadia Boulanger ,Edgard Varèse andMax Deutsch . She emigrated toIsrael in 1929, where she joined the faculty of the Tel Aviv Academy of Music. Among her noted compositions were "Hebrew Poem" (1931) and "Quartet for Strings", which won an award at the 1949Béla Bartók Competition inBudapest .She was the younger sister of poet
