Sopot, Albania

Sopot, Albania

Sopot is an area in north-east Albania. It is also a county and mountain with the same name.

According to legend, during the Ottoman invasion of this mountainous part of Albania, women with their children flew from the castle's wall so as not to surrender to the Ottomans.

Following five hundred years of Ottoman occupation and islamisation, the population of Sopot now carries two names, one moslem and one christian, called cryptochristian (ism).

Sopot, or the definite form (Alb - Sopoti), also refers to the football team of the city of Librazhd, where the Sopot mountain and county are located.
