Sadegh Tirafkan (born July 3, 1965 in
Karbala ,Iraq ) is anIranian contemporary artist who lives inTehran ,Iran .Tirafkan uses his knowledge of
Persian culture to explore his idenity. The strong attachment to his Persian roots clearly shows in his artwork, which employs different media:photography , video installation, and collage.Tirafkan was born in Iraq to Iranian parents, but his family fled the country when he was six years of age before the start of the
Islamic Revolution .He graduated from Tehran University with a degree in Photography in 1989 and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
Tirafkan is of a breed of Iranian
contemporary artists that does not shy away from controversial subject matter. His work has been cited as being thought provoking and provocative. Tirafkan's work includes Manhood, which deals with masculinity in Persian culture and reflects on the role of the Iranian male in the present time. Other works such asPersepolis ,Ashoura , Secret of Words , Iranian Man and Whispers of the East deal with history, identity, religious and gender issues. The Loss of Our Identity, explores the effect an increased presence of Western sensibilities and influences has had on the youth of present-day Iran.Projects
