Vladimir Karpovich Dmitriev

Vladimir Karpovich Dmitriev (1868-1913) was a Russian mathematical economist and statistician. Dmitriev was born in Smolensk and completed his studies in Moscow.

His main contribution, the now famous 1898-1902 "Economic Essays on Value, Competition and Utility" was subtitled 'An attempt at an organic synthesis of the labor theory of value and the theory of marginal utility'. He was heavily influenced by the Classical Ricardians, as well as by the work of Augustin Cournot. During his lifetime the importance of his work was recognised by Ladislaus Bortkiewicz, but after his death (of tuberculosis) it was largely forgotten. In the 1960's Dmitriev was 'rediscovered' by Sraffa, and he has since been considered to be the first 'Neo-Ricardian'.
