Club Deportivo Motagua is a Honduran football club, located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán, and plays in the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino. The club is one of the most successful and renowned of Honduras. The club was founded 29 August, 1928.

History

Foundation

The club was founded on 29 August, 1928 as the idea of Marco Antonio Ponce and supported by Marco Antonio Rosa in meeting celebrated at home of Widowed Mrs. Martha Vélez de Ramos; located at side of the Bank of London and Montreal, taking advantage of the clubs America, Honduras, Athletic and Aguila disintegrating, they decided to call to all the players of these teams forming thus the joint one Motagua. In the same meeting the Board of directors headed by Marco Antonio Rose and the doctor Alejandro Lara followed by another group of personalities were elected. This board of directors supported the Female Basketball, Baseball and Athletics teams.

First Game

Against the Tejeros del España of the Neighborhood Guanacaste 25 November, 1928 in the soccer pitch the Island the result was 1:1. The referee of the encounter was Herasmo Velásquez and the captain of the Motagua was Constantine Gálvez "Tatino".

Club History

The club "blue", was founded 29 August, 1928 by idea of the poet Marco Antonio Ponce and supported by Marco Antonio Rosa, and is a fusion of the disintegrated teams America, Honduras, Atlético and Aguila; that being inspired in the Motagua River that in those times was in dispute with Guatemala they gave origin to the "Cyclone", and is nowadays one of the teams with mosr achievements, popular and oldest of Honduras.

The metropolitan club is one of the best of Honduras and Central America and already has accumulated many championships, being also an old acquaintance of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, where has participated in diverse opportunities although yet has not been able to arrive a final hostess; in 1986 had her but noticeable action al to achieve the fifth position.

In season 1965-66 it debuted in National League, on 18 July in the city of La Ceiba against the "reds" of the Vida, where they succumbed 1:4. It was to 3 years later of the inauguration of the Professional League that achieved their first national title in 1968-69 under the management of the Honduran coach Rodolfo Godoy. This year Motagua also obtained the first ever Honduran Cup, winning the double that season.

It repeated in 1970-71 and 1973-74, being this one of the better times of the "Ciclón Azul". Pitifully in 1972-73 the national championship was declared nil, depriving him to Motagua to be judged the title that it had almost in the market, since carried an almost insurmountable advantage on its escort to few dates of the end.

After having achieved the title of the regular season in 1978-79, Motagua classifies to the playoffs, obliged to play the finals where they raise their fourth cup.

The Honduras national football team sees its dream carried out and classifies to a world cup of soccer where does history, carrying as base to Motagua and Real España.

They passed 13 long years until in the season 1991-92 savored again a championship in one of the ends but recalled by the standard "blue". In 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1998 it achieves four subtitles of the discontinued Honduran Cup. In the season 1997-98 the league brings to our feet the innovative opening tournaments system and closure, and Motagua he manages to judge both, being this the first one double championnship in the history of the motagüenses, double championship that was repeated barely 2 years but late achieving the opening and closure of 1999-2000. Some months before in January of 1999 there was crowned as champion of the Honduran Super Cup after beating in the final Platense of Puerto Cortes.

In the 2000 again Motagua is base of the selection, in this occasion of the Sub-23 and Honduras achieves for the first time in its history its pair to some Olympic games.

The last title, Motagua achieved it on 17 December, 2006 (2006-2007 Apertura season) after defeating Olimpia and not letting them win their 4th consecutive final. One year later in December 2007, they won their first international competition in Copa Interclubes UNCAF 2007, but three weeks later Motagua lost the domestic title in the 2007-08 Apertura season.

In their football record, Motagua was crowned in 27 opportunities, this number includes amateur and professional tournaments, and is one of the clubs that has given more glory to Honduran football by forming players of high level that have known to behead in our different national selections, as in foreign clubs.

Motagua's main rival is Olimpia.
