The Submarines are an indie pop band from Los Angeles, California. Working as solo artists in Boston, the two members of the band, John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard, were introduced through a mutual friend. Dragonetti and Hazard soon become romantically involved, and toured Europe together as members of each other's band. The relationship lasted for four years, but ended in the fall of 2004 when the pair moved to L.A. Knowing this, the duo decided to work on a few songs together and eventually got back together. Hazard, who is the great-granddaughter of American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald [Carraway, Kate. Weekly, 2008-09-25] , has said of the relationship, "It’s hard, definitely hard. Luckily we are like-minded aesthetically and musically." "Declare a New State", The Submarines' first album, is what came out of these recording sessions. The album was mastered by a friend as a wedding present, and released in 2006 on the Nettwerk label. "Honeysuckle Weeks", their second full length album was released through iTunes on April 15, 2008, and was released physically on May 13, 2008 again through Nettwerk. The Band performed material from this album on a 2008 tour with Aimee Mann.

"Brightest Hour" from "Honeysuckle Weeks" also appeared on Grey's Anatomy Season 4 Episode 14 - "The Becoming" during a scene in which Derek asks Meredith whether or not she wants him to stay with her to watch a patient over night rather than go home with Rose.

An instrumental cut of "You, Me and the Bourgeoisie", also from "Honeysuckle Weeks", was used in a world-wide commercial for Apple, Inc. new iPhone 3G. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XR7o9CjkiM] The spot, entitled "Everyone", began airing in July, 2008.

The Submarines covered The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" for American Laundromat Records tribute compilation "Just Like Heaven - a tribute to The Cure".
