The Hathershaw College

The Hathershaw College is a coeducational, comprehensive secondary school for 11 - 16 year olds in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. Its official name is 'The Hathershaw College of Technology and Sport', and the slogan is 'Together we succeed!'.

In 2007, OFSTED rated the school as "good".

The previous Headteacher was Mr David M Ashley who left to become Headteacher at Parrs Wood Technology College, the current Headteacher is Mrs Carol Cawkwell. The Deputy Headteacher are Mr Dave McEntee and Mrs Margaret Southwood. Mr Tom McIlroy, Mr Martin Turner, Mr Mark Giles and Mr Andrew Haughey are the Assistant Headteachers.

School History

The school began as 'Hathershaw Technical High School', and in 1966 it became a co-educational comprehensive school. Later, In 1981 Oldham's first joint school/community sports hall was built here. In 1992, under further reorganisation, it became an 11-16 establishment. In December 1999 it was recognised by the Government as one of the 50 most improved secondary schools in the country. Then, in September 2000 the school became an Technology College.In May 2003 the school became members of the Specialist Schools Trust "Value Added" club for significantly improving examination results between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4. In November 2004, the school received over £1 million in lottery funding to improve its sports facilities.In March 2005 the school became the first dual-specialism school in England, specialising in sport as well as technology. In October 2005, the school opened a new £350,000 netball complex.

In 2007, the College achieved its best ever GCSE results with Maths and English. In 2006, it achieved its best ever results with 60% of students achieving 5 A*-C grades.

Incidents

Drugs
The school has an anti-drugs policy and excluded several year 10 pupils in late 2006 for smoking cannabis on school premises.

Racism
In April 2004, a year 11 pupil was stabbed in a racist incident and was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, Two pupils involved were arrested by Greater Manchester Police.

Vandalism
In early 2007, several windows were smashed by a year 11 pupil.
On 19 January 2007, a 15-year-old pupil threw a brick at a car smashing the window and nearly injuring two young children. Violence
In November 2006, a video was uploaded to YouTube by a year 11 pupil seemingly showing another pupil being beaten up. This was later found to be a hoax.
