SSULI

The Special Sensor Ultraviolet Limb Imager (SSULI) is an imaging spectrometer that is used to observe the earth's ionosphere and thermosphere. The SSULI instruments operate by observing the natural airglow of the upper atmosphere in the far and extreme ultraviolet to determine the atmospheric constituents, density, and vertical limb profiles. These instruments ( a total of five) were designed and built by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory are part of the Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) block of 5D3 satellites.
