She married her husband,Garret Hobart , in Paterson on July 21, 1869, at the start of his career as a lawyer and politician. In 1896 her husband was electedVice President of the United States and the family moved toWashington, D.C. . AsSecond Lady of the United States , Hobart often served as White House hostess because PresidentWilliam McKinley 's wife,Ida Saxton McKinley , suffered fromepilepsy . Garret Hobart died ofheart failure onNovember 21 ,1899 leaving Jennie widowed. She died onJanuary 8 ,1941 inHaledon, New Jersey .ource
