Ramu Kariat 1 February 1928, (Engandiyur, Thrissur, Kerala) - 10 February 1979 (Thiruvananthapuram) was a film director who is regarded as one of the pioneers who had put Malayalam movies in the forefront of Indian cinema.In 1954, Kariat, along with P. Bhaskaran, co-directed [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0155906/ Neelakkuyil] , a movie that brought in realism in Malayalam films. In 1965 he directed the movie Chemmeen that went on to win the first National Film Award for Best Film of the year award for a Malayalam movie.
