- Spanish poker
Spanish Poker is a variation of
draw poker . It is usually played as five card draw. A player can draw up to three cards without out an ace, or four cards if the player has an ace in his hand which must be exposed to draw four. It is played with a single ante, and a single bet and raise betting structure after the draw. (If your playing $5 spanish poker, there is a $5 ante, any player may bet $5 after the draw, and any player is allowed to make one $5 raise.) It follows the basic rules of poker with a few modifications. Instead of the standard 52-card deck, a 32-card deck is used. This is formed by removing all cards of denominations deuce through six, 20 cards total, from the deck, making seven the new low card (aces can still go low in straights, preceding a seven, e.g. A♦7♣8♥9♣10♠ is a low straight). They player who holds the highest red pair before the draw (if any players hold one at all) wins a bet. . Two red pairs before the draw wins 2 bets, but only if the higher of the two red paris is the highest red pair on the table. (two red kings and two red queens, wins nothing if a player has two red aces in the same hand, in which case the player with the two red aces would win a bet). Straight flushes pay double the ante, and four of a kind is called poker and pays double the ante as well. Due to the wide array of possible bets the game is usually not played with chips, instead players keep track of bets with a pad and paper. (similar to gin). It can be played 2-4 handed. The game is said to have originated at The Woodmere Country Club, in Woodmere NY, where employees would play the game on their breaks.
