Moira Sullivan

Moira Sullivan is an international scholar, lecturer, film critic, and experimental filmmaker based in Stockholm and San Francisco, a dual national of the USA and Sweden.She is one of the world's experts on the work of the legendary filmmaker Maya Deren, and created a website dedicated to her work in 1993: [http://www.mayaderen.org The Maya Deren Forum.]

Biography

Awarded a doctorate in 1997 from Stockholm University she received her diploma in the audience of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden at the historic Stockholm City Hall "Blå Hallen", home of the [http://nobelprize.org/award_ceremonies/banquet/menus/soderlind/index.html Nobel Prize Banquet] . Sullivan was a Humanities Honor Student at University of California, Riverside and member of the debate team with numerous awards at public speaking tournaments. She was awarded a scholarship to Sweden from the University of California Education Abroad Program at Lund University in 1976. In 1977 she studied filmmaking at St Erik's Folkhögskola in Stockholm and her student exam film concerned a threatened housing area called [http://www.ur.se/ramp/historia1/skugga_fakta1.php Kvarteret Mullvaden] , an event which garnished tremendous public support in Stockholm. Later she studied [http://www.film.su.se/ Cinema Studies Department at Stockholm University] and the [http://www.cinema.sfsu.edu/ Graduate Cinema Studies Department at San Francisco State.] Sullivan lectures on cinema studies at universities in Sweden and the USA. She is a professional translator from Swedish to English and has worked on manuscripts about Ingmar Bergman and Christina of Sweden (1626-1689). She has also worked with cultural exchange and language studies at University of California Berkeley, Berklee College of Music in Boston, San Francisco State University, and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Film Exhibition, Production and Reception

In the 1980's Dr. Sullivan established an international cinema forum at Kvinnohuset - Freja Film patterned after the cinema collective Cinemine in Amsterdam where film screenings were followed by discussion with the audience. Among the many guests invited to Freja Film was filmmaker Barbara Hammer and Swedish actress [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0306617/ Pia Garde] . At a special film conference in Amsterdam the UN declared Freja Film to be the international contact organization for women's films. Sullivan is currently a member of the [http://www.femmetotale.de/z_pages/ecff_e.html European Coordination of Film Festivals, Working Group for women] which meets at the [http://www.filmsdefemmes.com Créteil Films de Femmes Festival in Paris.] She also serves as the Nordic contact person for the festival and is the Nordic editor and correspondent for [http://www.filmfestivals.com Filmfestivals.com, Paris] , the largest film festival portal on the internet.Sullivan has given filmmaking workshops at [http://www.kvinnohojden.se/ Kvinnohöjden] in Borlänge Sweden and was one of the original members of the Swedish artist's collective "Zinobra" in Nacka. Her experimental films made in Skala Eressos, Lesbos in Greece and in Stockholm, Sweden have been shown in Sweden, Greece, USA and France.
Since 1994 she has served on the program committee for the [http://www.filmfestival.org/filmfestival/ Göteborg Film Festival] in Sweden and has been invited to the International Critic's Week.
