Communist Ireland

Liam O'Flaherty and a number of Communists rebelled in Dublin shortly after the foundation of the Irish Free State, flying the red flag from the Rotunda Meeting Rooms. Both factions of the IRA in Dublin supported the government in oppressing the rebellion, which failed after a while.

*16 January 1922 - Free State founded
*18 January 1922 - Rebellion by Communists
*22 January 1922 - Communist Republic falls and is incorporated into Irish Free State
*14 April 1922 - Anti-Treaty seize Four Courts
*24 April 1922 - Free State moves against Anti-Treaty; Civil War begins

Area held by Communist Republic

Only the Rotunda Halls were held, in spite of calls for seizure of buildings throughout Ireland.

Flag of Rebellion

The flag of the rebellion has been described as a red flag. Whether this incorporated the hammer and sickle insignia is unknown.

Rebellion in Cork

Though rebellion was called for in Cork it is not known whether it materialised.
