Stefan Lano was born in
Boston, Massachusetts , and he began his musical career as a composer and pianist.In 1976, he initiated in the symphonic genre as composer and conductor with the premiere of his Symphony nº 1 in the Festival of Music of Newport. After his graduation in
Harvard and the acquisition of aFullbright scholarship to study inGermany , Lorin Maazel summoned him to enter in theOpera of Vienna .In 1988, he was nominated the associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he worked both in the symphonic area and in the operistic one. Also he has worked in Europe, where recently he has conducted "
Turandot " byPuccini inHamburg ; "Jakob Lenz" and "Die Eroberung von Mexico" by Wolfgang Rihm in Bonn and Nuremberg, the premiere of "Rashomon" by Mayako Kubo inGraz , "Le nozze di Figaro " by Mozart, in Basel and Munich and the acclaimed productions of "The Rake's Progress " by Stravinsky, "Elektra" by Strauss and "Jenůfa " by Janáček, in Basel.He has conducted the
Pittsburgh Symphonic Orchestra , the Yomiuri Symphony of Japan, the Basler Symphoniker, the Nürnberger Philharmoniker and Symphoniker, the Rio de Janeiro Orchestra.... Lano was invited to inaugurate the 1993 season of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and since then, he has been a regular guest in this city, conducting "Wozzeck " and "Bluebeard's Castle ", "L'amour des trois oranges", "Die tote Stadt " and "Salome". He has been conductor of the Salzburg Festival, La Scala of Milan, the Liceu of Barcelona and the Opera of Cincinnati. Lano continues with his composing tasks: he has completed recently his Symphony nº 3, and Eikasia Variations for brass quintet stands out his works of chamber music, which has been recorded by the Philharmonic of Vienna.
