This airport was start within the resettlement and malaria control in Chitwan valley under the assistance of the Government of
United State of America. The first passenger carrying flight landed in the airport in 05 marches 1965.Profile

The airport was initially served by domestic flights with grass runway from
Tribhuvan International Airport ,Kathmandu andPokhara Airport inPokhara by the country's national airlineNepal Airlines . After many years of lobbying by the local people and expatriates living in the abroad, limited expansion of the airport was carried out new terminal building has been made, the 1158 miter runway is paved for the enable medium-sized aircraft, such as theAvro used by Nepal Airlince and Nicon Air, to operate. The work was completed in October 2005. but theFokker Jet ofCosmic Air is unable to operate in this airport due to 150 miter short length of the runway.The growing demand of the people of Chitwan valley for the international airport force government to study the possibility in Chitwan valley , the survey was began in 1988 and completed in 1989 the survey units advice the government to sale the land of current airport and another airport in Meghauli and buy the land in Sibaghat aria to make a international airport with east west runway on the banks of
Naryani River , its clearly said that making a international airport in Sivghat aria of the valley with east west runway will never make sound pollution to the wild animal ofChitwan National Park nearly 40 to 50 km far. And sealing the valuable land of Current airports (it is in the city center of Bharatpur) will cover 75% expenditure, But this survey never implemented by the government authorities but the local people and expatriates of Chitwan valley are continuing their demand to make a international Airport withinChitwan Valley .Incidents and accidents

All four crew and 31 passengers were killed. *25 April 1996 - RNA BAe 748 Series 2B (9N-ABR) overran the runway atMeghauli Airport ,(19 km of Bharatpur Airport) after a flight from Kathmandu, when landing in rain on the grass airstrip. The aircraft ran across some ditches, causing the nosegear to collapse. None of the 4 crew and 27 passengers were injured.References
