Chichi, Nantou

Chichi (zh-tpwp|t=集集|p=jíjí|w=Chi-chi|poj=Chip-chı̍p) is an urban township located in the west central portion of Nantou County in Taiwan.The epicenter of the major 1999 earthquake in Taiwan was located in and named after the township.

History

Han Chinese from Zhangzhou began arriving in the area in 1771.cite web|title="About Chichi(關於集集)"|url=http://www.chi-chi.gov.tw/html/profile0.php|date=2007-02-22|language=traditional Chinese] The name originates from "Chiv-Chiv", a phrase in the Formosan languages.

Geography

Chichi is bordered by Jhongliao to the north, Mingjian to the west, Jhushan and Lugu to the south, and Shueili to the east. The Choshui River flows westward along the south border of the township. Chichi Township has a total area of 49.72 square kilometers. The lowest point in the township lies at 230m above sea level and its highest point is Big Chichi Mountain at 1392m above sea level. The township is very mountainous and is surrounded by mountains on all sides.
