Castellar del Vallès is a municipality of the comarca of Vallès Occidental.

Its located to 7km from Sabadell and 11km from Terrassa, the two comarca's capitals. Other villages near Castellar del Vallès are Sant Llorenç Savall, Matadepera and Sentmenat.

History

The first evidence of human presence is from the 7000 aC. However exists evidence of agricultural activity in the Neolithic, about the 5000 aC. The continuation of human presence is confirmed by twentieth one of funereal urns dated in the century VII aC, which were located in the Plan of La Bruguera, in the municipal term with formed posterity, for a small necropolis of the age of the iron.

In year 2005, when the remodelling of the center of Castellar was made archeologic finds that confirm the presence appeared of a city of late roman period, with funereal rests|subtractions and other related with the agricultural activity, in IV and V centuries, later substituted by a Visigothic settlement in the 6th centuries in VIII.

A part of the original village of Castellar Vell, excavated among 1995 and 2001 it was dated in Carolingian period, between years 800 and 1000. In this same place, he|she|it located and excavated a cemetery with 250 burials of XI, XII and XIII centuries, as well as other finds that allow to affirm that had human activity until its abandonment in the century XVIII.

The people of the village have been traditionally tied to the marquises of Castellar, who in the present live in Barcelona.

At level of natural catastrofes, according to the disposable records|registries, along period 1968-2006 181 forest fires or attempts of fire that have affected the term have been produced. This supposes an average of 4,64 annual fires. The area|surface burned in this period is from 470,8 has., an annual average of 2,6 has. burns for fires. The senior fire that has affected Castellar was produced July of 1983, which burned to the sector of the Old Shoemaker 75 hectares. In the last 10 years, 23 fires have been produced, which it means an average of 2,3 annual fires and a burned area|surface in total of 5,7 has. In just two occasions, the area has been superior to one hectare, only muddied by the proximity to the great forest fire of Sant Llorenç de Savall, the month of August of 2003, where 2.953,85 burned occurred has.

The more remembered snowfalls are the ones occurred in 1962, when some roads and avenues came off non transitable for days because of the accumulation of snow, and the most recent of 2001, with vehicles pierced on the main roads of the town. About the floods, it is necessary to highlight the historical flood of September of 1962, that it|he|she caused mortal and severe victims damages in the ancient|antique factory Tolrà placed in Can Barba, about infrastructures -in the bridge of the Brunet- and in several zones of farming placed in terraces of the Ripoll river and affluents.

Economy

Traditionally the main economical source of Castellar del Vallès has been the agriculture. It founded in typical Mediterranean growing (wine, olive tree, wheat, dried fruit and nuts) complemented by products of the vegetable garden. In some moment the growing of vegetal fibres conditioned by the appearance of the first manufacturing is introduced in the margin of the Ripoll river from the Middle Ages (linen and hemp).

From the 19th century an unstoppable process of industrialization being profitable starts the force|strength of the water of the Ripoll river, first manufacturing of the wool, after cotton and like this until the 20th century in that the industrial development keeps on converting the lands of growing into built-up areas or industrial estates, leaving to the agriculture like residual economical activity. A true every time more important tertiary sector, converting the economy of Castellar into the typical one of a post-industrial society.

The industrial development of Castellar del Vallès has been a lot joined to that of the textile company Tolrà, for the number of jobs as well as for the contributions of patronage of this family to the seat|town. Transport

Castellar is communicated by two roads: the C-1415a, which joins the town to Sentmenat and Matadepera, and the B-124, which makes the same one with Sabadell and Sant Llorenç Savall. The public transport consists at present of regular lines of buses. There is a line of the company Sagalés that makes regular transports in Sentmenat. The rest of itineraries are covered by the company Sarbus, precisely three lines of urban transport (C4, C5 and C6), and the lines of Sabadell (C1) and Sant Llorenç (C3), popularly known, like La Vallessana or La Burra ("The donkey") due to the noun of the company that long ago covered the route. Castellar has been traditionally badly communicated with the populations of that going round and especially with the headboards of region. The great economic development and population experienced for the town, it has left insufficient the communications for road with Sentmenat, Terrassa and Sabadell. It is possible that this situation can improve soon with the construction of the west round of Sabadell, and the axis of the Ripoll, what it would allow many castellarenques and castellarencs not to have to pass through Sabadell to direct itself in Barcelona or Terrassa. Also it seems quite to take the idea about the arrival of a line of train of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya until the town which is scheduled for 2012 or 2013.

Politics

Castellar del Vallès has had a mayor of the coalition CIU until 2007, even though a coalition had won the first local elections from the reestablishment of the democracy between the PSC and the PSUC. Anyway, during legislature 1999-2003 and in spite of to count absolute majority, Lluís Maria Corominas i Díaz arrived at a pact with ERC and PSC. Detached of the elections of 2003 and with the loss of absolute majority, CIU governs, first one with Lluís Maria Corominas and Díaz and detached with Montse Gatell while the PSC headed the opposition, during the legislature 2003-2007 with ERC. On the 27 May of 2007, the list of the PSC headed by Ignasi Giménez Renom won the elections with 41,25% of the votes and 10 town councilors forming government in minority.
