Maya Kamath Indian cartoonist, 1951 - 2001.
Born in Bombay, she spent her formative years in Delhi, and acquired an MA in English literature. Drawing was a hobby with her as a child, and this talent flowered during her stint as an illustrator with Macmillan's and as a drawing teacher at Sophia's School. The turning point came when she set her eyes on the sketches of a book titled For better or for Worse by Lynn Johnston. Wonderstruck, she plunged into the world of cartooning.
She began her career as a cartoonist in 1985 with The Evening Herald a publication of Deccan Herald group. In the later years she worked for Indian news papers like The Indian Express, The Asian Age and Times of India.
She also contributed environmental cartoons in a German collection called Third World and has been awarded on many occasions.
Her collection is currently with SPARROW link below and has been published as The World of MAYA
In October 1998, the Karnataka Cartoonists' Association conferred an award on her on the occasion of the 7 th Cartoonists' Conference.
Every year, Indian Institute of Cartoonists organize Maya Kamath Memorial Awards Contest for Excellence in Cartooning.
