J Lonesome Jones (fictional character)

In John Birmingham's Axis of Time universe, J Lonesome Jones is a U.S. Marine Officer who is commander of the 82nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, later 82nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. Back in 2021, Jones was married to a Frenchwoman named Monique Danton who worked for Medecins Sans Frontieres, whose brother, Ensign Danton was a junior officer of the French Navy assigned to the "Robert Dessaix".

During the Second Iran-Iraq War, specifically the Battle of Fallujah, Jones was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing the crew of an M1A2 Abrams Tank from the mob of jihadists brandishing RPGs that had shot out the tank's tracks.

Jones had one of the toughest integrations to 1940s society, being both black and a Marine. By the Time of the end of Final Impact, Jones had achieved the rank of Brigadier General. Lonesome's first name is not revealed.
