Leoncio Prado Military Academy

Leoncio Prado Military Academy is an educational institution of Peru, created by Decree Law on August 27 1943 by President Manuel Prado y Ugarteche and the Secretary of Education Elías La Rosa [Decreto de creación del Colegio] .

Creation and First Autorithies

On January 18 of 1944, through Law 9890, it was given the name of Leoncio Prado, one of the heroes of the Pacific War and in July 15 of the same year it was officially inaugurated and started its academic works. The first authorities of the Academy were the Headmaster colonel EP José del Carmen Marín Arista and Academic Director Dr. Manuel Velasco Alvarado.

In 1945, colonel EP Juan Mendoza Rodríguez assumes the direction of the school. Between his first teachers were, Gustavo Pons Musso, Alfredo Rebaza Acosta, Walter Peñalosa Ramella, Humberto Santillán Arista, Flavio Vega Villanueva, Ricardo Carzorla Sormani, Luis Bedoya Reyes, among others remarking characters of Peruvian history.

Location and Structure

The school is located in the limit of Constitutional Province of Callao and the district of San Miguel, in Costanera Avenue 1541, La Perla, Callao.

On the structure, from the beginning was constituted by the barracks Guard Chalaca, which in inauguration was only constituted with two pavilions without doors or windows; further implemented by diverse facilities as kitchen, dining room, bedrooms, infirmary, laboratories, administrative offices, auditorium, swimming pool, stadium, library, gymnasium, workshops, coliseum enclosure, all what is needed to maintain a standard education facility.

Academic Reform

Between 1977 and 1981 it goes from a military high school to Top School of Professional Education (ESEP) based on he Academic Reform which was executed in those years. Most of the teachers of the previous stage emigrated or moved away from teaching and the school was filled with a new generation of teachers.

In 1982, it was returned to the state of high school. Ever since, its name returned to be Military School Leoncio Prado. At the present, the academic curricula is based on the guidelines of Ministry of Education.

Worldwide Appearance

This school came to worldwide knowledge by the multitranslated novel La ciudad y los perros by the famous Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa.
