Demetrius Cydones

Demetrius Cydones

Demetrius Cydones (1324 in Thessalonica - 1397 in Crete, also transliterated Demetrios Kydones) was a Byzantine theologian, translator and writer. He was the brother of Prochorus Cydones.

After converting from Eastern Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism, he attempted to reunite the two branches of Christianity. He also wielded worldly power, being twice the prime minister (1369–1383, 1391–1396) of the Byzantine Empire. His journey to Venice in 1390 which contributed to introduce Greek culture to Italy is credited with fostering the nascent Renaissance.
