Juan Carlos Payano

Juan Carlos Payano (born December 14, 1984) is a boxer from the Dominican Republic best known for winning a silver medal at flyweight at the Pan-Am Games twice.

Career

At the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo he lost to Yuriorkis Gamboa and won silver.

He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native Caribbean country. There he defeated Bato-Munko Vankeev but was beaten in the second round of the Flyweight (51 kg) division by France's eventual runner-up Jérôme Thomas.

2005 at the world championships he beat Yang Bo but lost to Andry Laffita.

2006 he defeated Laffita but lost to Zou Shiming at a tournament.He won the Central America Games, he beat McJoe Arroyo and won gold against Cuban Yoandri Salinas who had replaced Laffita.

2007 at the PanAm Games he won silver again, this time he beat Braulio Ávila but lost to McJoes brother McWilliams Arroyo

He qualified for the Olympics by winning his qualifier among others against Andry Laffita.

2008 Beijing Olympics at Workers’ Gymnasium, Juan Carlos Payano of the Dominican Republic upset two-time Olympic medalist Jerome Thomas of France.
