Civil union in Costa Rica

Gay civil unions are not legal in Costa Rica; however, the issue is being considered by the Legislative Assembly. The gay rights group The Diversity Movement has submitted a bill to the Legislative Assembly seeking to gain greater rights for same-sex couples. The bill however does not legalise same-sex marriage nor does it legalise gay adoption, which are considered much more controversial. [http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=34776]

On May 23, 2006 the Supreme Court ruled against same-sex couples seeking to be legally married. In a 5-2 decision the court ruled that it was not required by the constitution to recognise same-sex couples in family law. [http://www.advocate.com/news_detail.asp?id=31639]
