He is the son of Paul Slattery, QC, a commercial barrister in South Australia specialising in commercial law and equitable doctrines and remedies. His mother is a company executive and former university lecturer specialising in financial planning and accounting.
He is one of four brothers, all of whom have exceptional academic and sporting talent. His eldest brother is studying post graduate medicine after completing a physiotherapy degree, whilst playing for the SA Redbacks 2nd XI. His second eldest brother is also studying medicine after completing a PhD in Biomedial Science, and plays league football in Queensland. His third eldest brother is working as a lawyer for DLA Phillips Fox in Melbourne and continues to play league footabll in South Australia for Central Districts.
He was recruited from West Adelaide in the
SANFL with selection 46 in the 2004National Draft . Since his debut in the 2005 Home and Away season, he has impressed many fans with his hardness and aggression. He has mainly been used as a tagger, and has St Kilda starNick Dal Santo already amongst his scalps.Slattery's most impressive game so far of his short career came when Essendon defeated West Coast Eagles at a Friday night blockbuster at the Telstra Dome. He limited the influential
Daniel Kerr to 17 disposals, which included just 3 kicks, and went a long way to help the bombers win the game.Slattery has also been noted for his similarity in appearance to former
Essendon Football Club captain, and current Assistant CoachGary O'Donnell On 22nd June 2008, Slattery was involved in a horrific collision with
