Armchair Thriller

Armchair Thriller

"Armchair Thriller" was a British television program on ITV first broadcast in two series in 1978 and 1980. The series was based on the "Armchair Theatre" format with scripts based on published novels and stories. Though not properly a horror series it included several supernatural elements, and, in the second series, included one of the most terrifying title sequences of any British TV program - a red, maniacal face looming over an armchair. "Armchair Thriller" was produced by Thames Television though included serials made by other ITV companies. The format was of a twice weekly 30 minute episode usually screened on a Tuesday or Thursday at 8.30 - 9pm.

Amongst the first series was the story "Quiet as a Nun". Starring Maria Aitken is introduced the character Jemima Shore to television who was later spun off into her own ITV series. Other actors to appear included Ian McKellen.

As of August 2008, Network DVD have released six of the stories on DVD. A complete collection of the whole series is set to be released on the 3rd of November 2008.
